Youth arrested in Kuching after allegedly pulling off ‘wheelie’ stunt in front of police during operation

KUCHING (July 1): A 17-year-old male motorcyclists was arrested after he allegedly pulled off a ‘wheelie’ stunt in front of police at Jalan Setia Raja here yesterday.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement today said police were in the area to conduct an operation dubbed “Op Samseng Jalanan’ that was held between 4pm and 11.50pm.

“The 17-year-old will be investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving,” said Ahsmon.

He added that if found guilty, the suspect could face a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000 and a jail term not exceeding five years.

Ahsmon also said a total of 50 traffic summonses were issued during the operation.

Eight summonses were issued to individuals who were driving without a valid driver’s licence, no licence plate (nine), fancy licence plate (four), no wearing a helmet (one), expired driver’s licence (two), failing to display the “P” sticker (one), malfunctioned brake lights (one), modified exhaust (five), illegal modification (eight) and no side mirrors (11).

During the operation, police also seized a total of 13 motorcycles under Section 60(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for various offences such as illegal exhaust modification.

The seized motorcycles were brought to the Kuching district police headquarters for further action.

“Seventeen individuals were also slapped with compounds for failing to keep a physical distance and a gathering of more than two persons at a public place,” said Ahsmon.
