#NewMusicFlyday is our list of the hottest song releases, music videos, and exclusive interviews of the week!
James Arthur is back with one of 60 songs that he wrote during the lockdown, aptly titled Medicine. And in a new collaboration between Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak, we’ve got Silk Sonic ready to change the game in music. Meanwhile, both Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are on a ‘singles’ streak, both releasing another single each for their respective upcoming albums.
Also joining forces are Maroon 5 and Hot Girl Meghan Thee Stallion in a summertime bop.
Bringing it back to closer shores is the magic combination of Singaporean Gentle Bones and Filipino Clara Benin as well as Ezra Kairo and TY:DEL with local music to make us proud.
1. Medicine – James Arthur
The Say You Won’t Let Go singer says past battles with mental health taught him how to turn the pandemic on its head and channel his creativity for a new music chapter.
At the end of last year, James Arthur had revealed to Metro that he had spent time in lockdown rather productively, having written 60 songs.
“My last album confused people a bit. This album has a real sound. Sonically, you can tell it’s from the same batch of writing. It’s all written in my house, by me. It feels quite reflective, like someone doing a bit of soul searching,” Arthur stated.
2. Silk Sonic – Leave the Door Open – Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak
Introducing Silk Sonic, a project by 11-time Grammy Award winner Bruno Mars and the winner of Best R&B Album at the 2020 Grammys, Anderson Paak.
The album will feature Bootsy Collins as a “special guest host”, who also happened to be the one to dub the duo Silk Sonic. Ahead of the album, Mars and Paak have dropped their first track:
An Evening With Silk Sonic, marks Mars’ first overall album since 24K Magic in 2016.
Paak, on the other hand, most recently released his fourth studio album Ventura in 2019.
3. Hold On – Justin Bieber
After releasing one firey single after another, Justin Bieber is finally ready to put them all together in an album.
Dubbed Justice, Bieber promises that his sixth studio album is “crazy good”. But – not before blessing us with another single, Hold On!
Sharing the cover art on his Instagram page, Bieber said the album was created to share music that would “provide comfort”, that “people can relate to and connect to so they feel less alone”.
“In a time when there’s so much wrong with this broken planet, we all crave healing and justice for humanity. Music is a great way of reminding each other that we aren’t alone. Music can be a way to relate to one another and connect,” shared the Canadian singer.
Justice is set to drop 19 March and will include Bieber’s 2020 songs Holy (featuring Chance the Rapper), Lonely (featuring Benny Blanco), and Anyone.
4. Beautiful Mistakes – Maroon 5 feat. Meghan Thee Stallion
Bringing out a “side of her [he’d] never really heard yet”, Maroon 5 and Megan Thee Stallion have released a collaboration that is so very true to their brands. The duo brings contrasting perspectives to the song, Beautiful Mistakes, with Levine longing for a past love:
“I’m in love with the past
And now we lie awake
Making beautiful mistakes”
While Stallion is more focused on the future and on moving on as she raps:
“I know it’s hard to let go, I’m the best
Best you ever had and best you gonna get
If we break up I don’t wanna be friends
You’re toxic”
Levine went on to confirm that the band is done with their upcoming seventh studio album, choosing to remain secretive about its release date.
The album will be their first since their 2017 Red Pill Blues and is likely to bring together their 2019 single Memories and 2020 single Nobody’s Love.
5. Selfish Love – DJ Snake, Selena Gomez
In their second collaboration after Taki Taki, DJ Snake and Selena Gomez are back with a bilingual dance track (and rather ‘hellish’ music video).
DJ Snake called the song a “perfect evolution” for their relationship in music, saying of the song: “Selena and I had been talking and after Taki Taki we had to give the world another round with fresh summer vibes. Something that made it feel like summer the first time you heard it.”
Gomez opens the song as she sings about being jealous of someone she “wants to have” before crooning in the chorus:
“You want to make me jealous
All this time and we still got that selfish love
You likе making me jealous (I like making you jеalous)
It’s a game that stays between you and me”
The track along with previously released singles De Una Vez and Baila Conmigo will be included in her upcoming all-Spanish album, REVELACIÓN.
6. A Day At A Time – Gentle Bones, Clara Benin
Following his collaboration with Benjamin Kheng for the psychedelic track Better With You, Singaporean singer-songwriter Joel Tan (aka Gentle Bones) has enlisted the help of the equally talented singer-songwriter Clara Benin, who hails from the Philippines.
The pair, who haven’t actually met as ar result of the pandemic, worked together online during the lockdown by sending “a lot of large files through the web”. The result? Their gorgeous track, A Day At A Time.
A lovely tidbit: Gentle Bones had actually written A Day At A Time specifically with Benin in mind.
“She has great lyric writing and her voice is beautiful, to say the least. She makes music that I really look up to and always was a benchmark for me for folk music.”
The duo will be releasing a music video for the track on 8 March, comprising of short video snippets contributed by members of the public.
7. Hold Me – Ezra Kairo
Hold Me serves as a look into the inner workings of Malaysian singer Ezra Kario’s heart and mind. A song he holds close to his heart, this love song carries a different weight in its backstory.
Wanting to write a song for his late father, Ezra chose to approach the songwriting process from a different perspective – he notes that Hold Me is actually a song about his mother, written from his dad’s perspective.

8. so in love (tonight) – TY:DEL
Malaysian indie-pop band TY:DEL, pronounced “tidal”; comprising of Ritchie, Timothy, Carlson, and Roshan, have come a long way since starting out as a cover band in 2015.
They are continuing on their goal of creating music that brings good vibes to the ones listening to their original song: so in love (tonight).
9. What’s Next – Drake
No, it’s not Certified Lover Boy but it is new music!
As part of the Scary Hours 2 EP, Drake has dropped, What’s Next, Wants and Needs, and Lemon Pepper Freestyle. Guest spots on the tracks include Rick Ross and Lil Baby.
The new EP follows the first Scary Hours EP in 2018, which featured God’s Plan and Diplomatic Immunity. Meanwhile, we still don’t have a release date for his sixth full-length album, having delayed Certified Lover Boy’s’ original January release date following a knee injury.
