KUCHING (June 27): The Movement Control Order (MCO) in Sarawak will be extended like the rest of the country, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said today.
Uggah, who is also Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said the reason for this is because the Covid-19 cases in the state are stll high.
“Our cases are still high, so we extend our MCO,” he said when contacted.
Further details of the MCO extension is expected to be announced in SDMC’s Covid-19 daily update later today.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the nationwide MCO will not end tomorrow.
According to him, Malaysia is currently in the first phase of the Movement Control under the National Recovery Plan (NRP) which is scheduled to end tomorrow, but this will be extended as the daily number of Covid-19 cases is still above 4,000-case threshold.
He had told reporters at the Sunway Pyramid Convention here today that the current first phase would continue indefinitely until the threshold value for Covid-19 cases falls below 4,000 cases a day.
Sarawak has continued to record triple-digit Covid-19 daily cases, and is often among the top three states nationwide with the highest number of daily infections.
The state joined the rest of the country in implementing the MCO since June 1.
