SARIKEI: Sarikei MP Andrew Wong Ling Biu, who survived a 79-day battle with Covid-19, was among six elected representatives from Sarikei Division to receive their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine here Monday evening.
The MP, who was admitted into Sibu Hospital on March 7 last year and discharged on May 30, had been in a coma for 42 days. His son, national hammer thrower Jackie Wong, was also infected by Covid-19 and spent 73 days in the same hospital.
“I want to impress on the public that prevention is better than cure. The important message I want to send across is that Covid -19 is life-threatening and ought to be kept at bay at all cost.
“With the vaccine already available, get yourselves protected,” he said when met after receiving his jab at Sarikei Health Clinic.
He added that by getting the injection, he and the other elected representatives wanted to convince the public that the vaccine was safe and had minimal side effects.
Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing meanwhile said the people should have nothing to fear about getting themselves vaccinated.
He advised the people to register themselves to get the Covid-19 vaccine via the MySejahtera application, or at the nearest government health clinic.
The other elected representatives who received the vaccine were Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii, Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom, Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat and Julau MP Larry Sng.
Earlier, those who turned up at the clinic for vaccination included Sarikei Resident Felicia Tan, Deputy Resident Abang Mohd Porkan Abang Budiman, Sarikei District Officer Christopher Ranggau Unting, Meradong Disrict Officer Badjuri Bidin, Julau District Officer Khalid Andong, and Pakan District Officer Seroji Ludin.
