Quite busy traffic in MCO-imposed Sibu town as CNY approaches

Photo shows the traffic situation along Jalan Kampung Nyabor in Sibu yesterday.

SIBU: The traffic here has been heavy over the past several days ahead of the Chinese New Year (CNY) which falls this Friday.

An observation here yesterday showed that there were many vehicles on the major roads across town.

“It’s CNY (and) people doing their shopping – some departments have paid the salaries early.

“With Sibu Central Market being closed (until Feb 14), people go to other markets and supermarkets,” Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit told The Borneo Post when contacted.

On a separate subject, Stanley said 7,328 work-related travel permits had been issued by Sibu police between Jan 25 and Feb 8 this year, to local businesses categorised as essential services under the Movement Control Order (MCO).

He also said in the same period, 547 applications had been rejected due to various reasons.

Essential services cover  manufacturing, construction, services, distribution trade, plantation and commodities sectors.

Under MCO, only 30 per cent attendance of the management team is permitted for each sector, while the number of workers is determined by the implementation of physical distancing and public health protocols in the workplace.

The MCO in Sibu has been extended to Feb 14.
