The two Chinese words written on all three designs of the CIMB ang pows this year read ‘tuan yuan’, which means ‘togetherness’.
All designs also feature many round motifs, all of which are symbols of unity and togetherness.
2. Hong Leong Bank

Hong Leong Bank’s ang pows are adorned with cherry blossoms, which is a symbol of longevity and the arrival of spring.
The greeting on the ang pows read ‘he le an kang’ in Chinese. It means ‘wishing you happiness and good health’.
3. Alliance Bank

Alliance Bank’s ang pows feature cherry blossoms embellished with golden outlines.
The Chinese words written on the red packets simply read ‘Happy Chinese New Year’.
4. RHB

RHB’s ang pows feature cranes all on all designs, an animal that symbolises longevity and noble character.
As for the idiom written on the red packets, it reads ‘fu shou an kang’, which can be translated to ‘wishing you good health and long life’.
5. Maybank

Maybank Premier Banking’s ang pows are embellished with a golden koi fish, a symbol of wealth as the word fish in Chinese is a homonym for ‘abundance’.
The greeting on the ang pows reads ‘wu fu ling men’, which can be loosely translated to ‘wishing five blessings descend upon you’. The five blessings are longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and natural death.
However, that is the only ang pow design available this year as Maybank is encouraging users to send e-Angpao instead as a way to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.
6. Citibank
There are two designs in Citibank’s ang pows this year.
The first design shows gold ingots in a rice bowl, which can be seen as a good symbol of sustenance and wealth.
As for the second design, it is adorned with cherry blossoms, while the word in the middle reads ‘Chun’ — the spring season when Chinese New Year is celebrated.
7. Standard Chartered

Standard Chartered’s ang pows are simple, yet elegant. Both designs show a golden bull, which is fitting considering that 2021 is the Year of the Ox.
‘Happy Chinese New Year’ and ‘wishing you good luck every year’ are written on the ang pows.
8. OCBC Bank

OCBC Bank has many different ang pow designs for its many different banking clientele.
Most designs feature a big Chinese word that either means spring or good fortune, while the Premier Private Banking ang pows have two different proverbs about ‘wishing you more prosperity’ and ‘wishing everything goes as you desire’.
9. UOB
UOB’s ang pow designs seem to be covered with rice grains. They are a symbol of abundance and fertility.
The well-wishes written on them are blessings for abundant prosperity and luck.
10. Public Bank

Public Bank’s ang pows are decorated with cherry blossoms. If you look closely at the shape found in the orange part of the ang pows, you can see the word ‘xi’.
When the word ‘xi’ is written in a circular shape, it is a symbol of endless joy.
