KUCHING (May 18): Two motorists were detained while 27 compounds were issued for various traffic violations during an ‘Op Mabuk’ operation conducted by police at Jalan Simpang Tiga here on Sunday night.

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the operation involved one officer and 12 personnel from the district police headquarters’ Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division.

“The operation was to check for road users driving or riding under the influence of alcohol,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said three local men, aged 35, 44 and 54, were stopped on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The results of a breathalyser screening showed two of the men were over the permitted alcohol level. The third man did not exceed the maximum limit,” he said.

Merbin said two who tested over the limit would be charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of not less than RM10,000 and not exceeding RM30,000, or a maximum jail term of five years, upon conviction.

On the compounds issued, he said they were for offences such as not wearing seatbelts (1), no registration number (2), car plate not adhering to regulations (6), failure to present driving licence (6), and expired driving licence (1).

One compound was also issued for failure to display road tax sticker, expired road tax (2), not displaying the probationary ‘P’ sign (1), modified exhaust (4), incomplete accessories (2) and no side mirror (1).

A total of 71 vehicles were inspected with 84 individuals tested for alcohol consumption during the operation.

“The police will continue to carry out such operations to send a clear message against driving under the influence of alcohol, in our efforts to reduce road accidents especially those that result in death,” he added.
