Man remanded 3 days after being caught for allegedly flouting Covid-19 mandatory quarantine in Miri

MIRI (Nov 30): A 24-year-old man has been remanded for three days after he was arrested for allegedly flouting the government-imposed Covid-19 mandatory quarantine at a hotel here.

Magistrate Md Syafique Md Hilmie ordered the suspect to be remanded until Dec 3 although investigating officer Insp Akmal Nashreq Abd Malik had initially applied for a four-day remand order.

In his remand application, Akmal Nashreq told the court that the suspect, who was undergoing mandatory quarantine at a designated hotel here from Nov 16 until Nov 29, was reported to have allegedly flouted the quarantine order by leaving the quarantine centre without permission.

Following a report lodged, the suspect was arrested at around 5.20pm on Nov 29 at Miri Central Police Station.

He was investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code for negligent act which is likely to spread infection of any disease that is dangerous to life; and under Section 22(b) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

The suspect, who was at the time a Person-Under-Surveillance (PUS) was seen in a close circuit television  (CCTV) to have walked out of the quarantine centre on Nov 20, Nov 21 and Nov 22.

When questioned, the suspect told the police that he had gone back to his family’s home.
