Meet Datuk Dr Lee Bee Phang.
Malaysia’s first Chinese policewoman with the rank of Commissioner.
On 12 March, Lee was appointed as Bukit Aman IGP Secretariat (Research and Development) chief
Her appointment came with a rank promotion from Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to Commissioner of Police (CP), making her the first Malaysian-Chinese policewoman to hold the rank of CP, reported Oriental Daily.
A CP is the third-highest ranking title a police officer can be awarded after Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG).
Prior to her appointment, Lee served as the deputy chief of Bukit Aman IGP Secretariat (Research and Development)
According to New Straits Times, Lee was promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner on 28 May 2015.
At that time, she was the chief executive of the Institute of Public Security of Malaysia (IPSOM).
Lee has been a policewoman for over 34 years. She joined the force as a trainee in 1987.
According to Gaung Ming Daily, she is a highly educated and talented police officer.
In 1988, she attained a master’s degree in social sciences from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). By 2010, she received her doctorate in juvenile crime from Universiti Malaya (UM).
Lee was conferred with Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) and Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) in 2005 and 2014, the latter of which carries a ‘Datuk’ title.
