KUCHING (June 18): A Magistrates’ Court here today approved remand applications from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on two local authority officers to investigate alleged abuse of power by gratification.
The first suspect, a 34-year-old, will be remanded until Sunday (June 20), while the 32-year-old second suspect will be remanded until Tuesday (June 22) for investigations under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
Magistrate Zaiton Anuar granted the remand orders.
Both suspects were arrested at the Sarawak MACC headquarters around 6pm yesterday (June 17).
The suspects allegedly abused their positions in the local authority by soliciting bribes from a developer to issue an occupational permit for a housing project at Jalan Sultan Tengah in 2019.
In the remand application, MACC stated it needed more time to investigate and record the statements of both suspects, who play key roles in the case.
The Commission said the order is also needed to ensure both suspects did not destroy evidence needed to investigate the case.
MACC will also call in other witness and suspects for their statements.
