Hair salons, roadside hawkers resume business

Kedai Gunting Rambut Jalan Gaya is open for business since last Tuesday.

KOTA KINABALU: After a month of closure, hair salons have opened for business as the State Government has allowed barber shops and hair salons to operate during Phase One of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) even though the Federal Government has yet to approve the new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Sabah.

Kedai Gunting Rambut Jalan Gaya has been operating since June 29, the day after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor announced the revision in SOPs to allow hair salons to reopen.

Established 34 years ago, the barber shop operates from 7.30am to 6pm.

Kwan Lee Chin, owner of Yee Lee Unisex Saloon at Jalan Gaya, said she resumed operation on Sunday but would only serve her regular customers.

“I was open on June 29 but shut down soon after I heard that hair salons were not allowed to operate.
“I only resume business today.”

Meanwhile, Michelle Yap, owner of Michelle Hair Makeup Studio and Academy at Karamunsing Capital, has also reopened for business after waiting in vain for the new SOPs for the last few days.

The hair salon is currently open from 9am to 7pm.

“As the new SOPs have not been released, we are following the old SOPs for the time being,” she said.

Hawkers selling vegetables, fish and fruits by the roadside, who are also allowed to operate by the State Government, have resumed business as well.
