Food traders do their bit in helping fellow townsfolk during hard times

SIBU (July 6): No deed is too small when it comes to helping one another go through these trying times, as shown by two food stall owners here.

A food operator at Ung Tong Corner along Jalan Permai here, who wishes to be identified only as ‘Aing’, is giving away 70 packs of free ‘kampua’ daily, until this Wednesday.

According to him, the noodles are sponsored by an individual, who has requested Aing to prepare and distribute this local favourite at his stall.

“The other day, this individual came to see me, telling me that he wanted to sponsor 600 packs of kampua for the needy folk.

“The sponsor left 70 packs for distribution at my stall, while he distributed the rest on his own.

“So, I am distributing 70 packs of free kampua starting today (yesterday).

“I open my stall at 6.30am – anyone can get the free noodles from my stall every day, until this Wednesday,” said Aing, who is in his late 40s.

A simple notice at Aing’s stall informs the public about the daily giveaway of kampua, running until this Wednesday.

Moreover, the stall operator said last Sunday, another individual came by and wanted to sponsor 1,000 packs of kampua, to be distributed for free at Aing’s stall.

“I guess there would be more free noodles for everyone after this,” said Aing, thanking the sponsors for their generosity in helping to alleviate the people’s burden during this difficult time.

“This (yesterday) morning, someone from Sibu Jaya came to my stall and asked for some noodles.

“I gave him extra because he travelled quite far for the noodles, and I wanted him to share the free kampua with his friends,” added Aing.

Meanwhile, another food stall owner, Chow Wei Hau, is now selling his chicken rice at RM2 per portion – down from the usual RM3.

“I have reduced the price of my chicken rice so that everyone can afford it.

“Making profit is not the main objective. I want to make sure that no one would go hungry.

“Yesterday (Sunday), someone bought 100 packs to be given to the needy folk,” said the 37-year-old trader.
Chow, who runs a stall at Lou Chow 3 Coffee Shop along Jalan Salim near here, said he would prepare 200 packs of chicken rice every day.

“I would be selling my chicken rice at this price (RM2) until the Covid-19 situation gets better and everyone can go out to work,” he said.
