MIRI (June 28): A 32-year-old man from Tudan here was arrested last Friday after he allegedly stole a wallet belonging to his e-hailing driver during a stopover at a petrol station.
Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari when contacted yesterday said the 64-year-old victim had picked up the suspect in the Marina area around 9.45am that day, and was sending him to Tudan when he stopped at a petrol station in Krokop.
“When the victim got out of the car to pump the fuel, the suspect is believed to have taken a wallet placed in the front seat and fled the scene,” he said, adding the wallet contained about RM2,000.
Acting on a police report lodged, Hakemal said a team from the district Criminal Investigation Division arrested the suspect at a house in Tudan but only managed to recover RM900 out of the RM2,000 that was reported stolen.
“It is believed the suspect used the rest of the money to settle his online gambling debt,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
