Covid-19: 16 more Delta variant cases detected in Kuching

Besides the Delta variant, another new case of the Beta variant (B.1.351) too had also been detected here in the same period, said Prof Dr David Perera.

KUCHING (July 13): Another 16 cases of the Delta variant (or B.1 617.2) have been detected up to July 4 in Kuching, said Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Institute of Health and Community Medicine director Prof Dr David Perera.

The institute has been tracking the SARS-COV-2 variants circulating in the state, he said in his latest report to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas today.

“As part of this ongoing surveillance, I would like to report that as of July 4, an additional 16 cases of the Delta variant were detected in Kuching,” he pointed out.

Besides the Delta variant, another new case of the Beta variant (B.1.351) too had also been detected here in the same period, he added.

“With the latest additions, the state had now 17 cases of the Delta variant, all detected in Kuching, David said.

The first case involved a 56-year-old man and the Delta variant on him was detected on June 18.

David meanwhile said Sarawak has 35 cases of the Beta variant reported in Kuching, three in Bau and one each in Lundu, Serian, Simunjan and Sibu.

“We had another three imported cases to make a total of 45 for this Beta variant.”

On the Theta variant, there was no increase in the number of cases, he said.
As per reported earlier, Sarawak had six cases detected in Kuching and seven in Kota Samarahan for this Theta variant, he said.

It is the same case for the Eta variant as there has been no increase, he said.

“As such, a cumulative total of 76 Variant of Concern (VOC) and Variant of Interest (VOI) have been detected in Sarawak from positive Covid-19 cases up to July 4,” David said, adding out of the total 76 cases, one was imported.

“We had one case which was an Import A case.”
