KUCHING (June 10): Simunjan police have conducted raids on two illegal cockfighting pits in Sebuyau this month.
Simunjan police chief DSP Nixon Joshua Ali said the police will not hesitate to take action against those found to have violated standard operating procedures (SOPs) under the Movement Control Order (MCO).
“So far, we have conducted two raids against illegal cockfights during this Movement Control Order,” said Nixon in a statement today.
He said the first raid was carried out at Kampung Jeragam, Sebuyau around 4.30pm on June 2.
Four male suspects, aged between 50 and 76, were arrested.
At the scene, police found and seized six live fighting cocks and one that had died.
The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Cruelty to Animals (Prevention) Ordinance 1963.
The suspects were also issued compounds under Rule 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021 for failing to wear a face mask and maintaining physical distancing.
Nixon said the second raid was conducted at a jungle area in Kampung Tuba, Sebuyau around 2.15pm on June 6.
“Somehow, the group of men who were at the cockfighting ring sensed the presence of police and managed to fled into the jungle,” he added.
Police then proceeded to dismantle and destroy the cockfighting ring as well as any paraphernalia used in the illegal activity.
The police advised the public not to take part in any illegal cockfighting to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
