Workers at a construction site in Kuala Lumpur got a scare when they discovered an object resembling a hand grenade while excavating the area last Friday, 7 May

Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the police were alerted about the suspicious device at the Tun Razak Exchange construction site around 12.50pm

“A team from the Bomb Disposal Unit (UPB) was immediately dispatched to the scene to inspect the object found by the workers,” he said in a statement on Sunday, 9 May, reported Harian Metro.

A police patrol unit was also deployed to the location to control the perimeter.

However, Mohamad Zainal said that after careful investigation was carried out by the UPB, they confirmed it was a power bank, not a hand grenade.

The tense situation was shared by one of the construction site’s managers on Facebook as it unfolded on Friday

“Subcontractor told us he found a hand bomb after digging a drain,” Mohd Nurul Syuhada WC wrote in a post.

However, after quickly alerting the police and having the situation defused within two hours, he said he was thankful for the police response even though the ‘bomb’ turned out to be a fake.

“I went to check online and found that the power bank is a brand from China,” he added, sharing a screenshot of the product priced at RM47 on Shopee.
