Firefighters place the body onto the police truck.

MUKAH (June 29): The body of a 48-year-old man, who fell into Igan River at Kampung Sungat Kut Tengah here on his way home after receiving vaccination at Dalat Stadium yesterday afternoon, has been found.

A spokesman of the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak operations centre said the man was identified as James Maun.

“The body was found by villagers at 4.35pm, about 500m away from the search and rescue (SAR) post control centre.

“The victim and his three family members were on their way home after undergoing vaccination at Dalat Stadium.

“The victim’s father said his son fell overboard while navigating the boat that they boarded,” said the spokesman.

He said Bomba Mukah station deployed four firefighters, led by senior officer Abdul Rasit Morni, upon receiving a report about the incident at 1.59pm.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the firefighters could see that the local villagers had already set up a SAR team to look for the man.

“The search later covered areas within 1km radius from the spot where the victim was last seen,” said the Bomba spokesman, adding that some 50 villagers were involved in the SAR mission together with the firefighters.

The operation ended at 5pm following the discovery of the body, which was later handed over to the police for further action.
