MIRI (May 17): Miri City Council (MCC) will mobilise crime prevention patrol teams of the neighbourhood watch committees to detect any social gatherings in residential areas that contravene the government’s standard operating procedures (SOP) against Covid-19.
Mayor Adam Yii said the teams will report their findings to the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC) for further action such as issuance of compound notices for breach of SOP imposed under Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).
“Social gatherings have been the main cause of five clusters detected in Miri, including the latest one, Jalan Lilin Cluster, that started from a birthday gathering,” said Yii in a statement.
He said the teams were initially set up in 2017 to assist the police to prevent crimes in neighbourhoods but they were now called upon to help curb the spread of Covid-19.
“They will be carrying out a new responsibility to act as the eyes for MDDMC to identify any social gatherings in order to prevent the residential areas becoming Covid-19 hot-spots.”
The Jalan Lilin Cluster was announced by the state disaster management committee on May 13 and has so far recorded 33 Covid-19 infections, including one new case yesterday.
