New clocks for Sandakan tower

SANDAKAN: The clock tower here will receive new clocks from Japan end of July or early August.

JCI Sandakan has been notified by Seiko Holdings Corporation that the clocks have been shipped out from Japan.

The previous old clocks installed in 1983/1984 were not functioning and were removed by the Sandakan Municipal Council in 2016 leaving the tower without clocks for some time.

To enable the tower to stay relevant and continue to function for what it was built, it was revitalised in 2021 with the installation of new Seiko solar battery-operated clocks donated by Seiko Holdings Corporation to the people of Sandakan.

The community project was initiated by 1983 JCI Malaysia National President JCI Senator Datuk John Liaw Chee Shing in close collaboration with JCI Japan, JCI Malaysia and JCI Sandakan.

It costs about RM150,000 to manufacture the clocks.

The JCI logos and plaque, which were previously removed, have now been properly remade and restored.

After the clocks have been properly installed and commissioned, the tower will be an attractive landscape in Sandakan.

The tower also serves as a tourist attraction for Sandakan town as it lies along the Sandakan Heritage Trail.
