KOTA KINABALU: Sabah recorded 271 new positive Covid-19 cases and a new cluster in Keningau on Sunday.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun said Beaufort recorded the highest new infections with 70 cases on Sunday, followed by Kota Kinabalu (61), Tawau (24), Putatan (19), Keningau (18), Sandakan (17), Kudat (16), Pitas (14) and Penampang (12).

Papar, Lahad Datu, Kota Belud, Kalabakan, Ranau and Tuaran registered single digit new cases.

Masidi, who is Sabah’s official Covid-19 spokesperson, said 145 of the 271 new cases on Sunday were detected through close contact screening, 69 from cluster screening, 32 from symptomatic screening, 18 from targeted screening and seven from other screenings.

He added that the 70 new cases in Beaufort originated from Lumadan Cluster screening (10), close contact screening (51) and symptomatic screening (9).

On the new cluster, Masidi said the Kayu Patikang Cluster in Keningau entailed the spread of Covid-19 at workplace, namely a log processing factory in Keningau, and involved Patikang and Lingkudau subdistricts.

The index case is a four-year-old girl, a non-citizen, who tested positive through symptomatic screening at Keningau Hospital. Contact screening on site discovered another 16 cases and two more cases reported by the temporary quarantine centre at Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Keningau.

So far, he said 19 positive cases, including 18 new infections, were detected from the 88 contacts screened.

Meanwhile, Masidi said 245 patients have been discharged from hospitals or recovered, whereas 1,911 patients were still undergoing treatment for Covid-19, including 393 at hospitals, 1,501 at Low-Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centres (PKRC) and 17 at temporary detention centre (PTS) or prisons.
