KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun today allowed an emergency motion on the recent Kuala Lumpur flood disaster to be tabled and debated in Parliament.

The motion was brought by DAP’s Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, and is scheduled for debate at 1pm today.

The motion was tabled under the parliamentary Standing Order 18(1).

“I have studied this matter and I find that this is a specific matter, of public interest and also needs to be expedited. Therefore, I allow this motion to be debated

“This motion will be debated at 1pm today in the Dewan Rakayt until 2.30pm,” Azhar said.

The national capital was struck by flash floods last Monday evening following heavy rains that left many people stranded in the city and crippled traffic in many key business districts.

The Monday rush hour floods followed similar floods just three months ago. The greater Klang Valley floods hit not just Kuala Lumpur but other areas in Selangor including the state capital of Shah Alam and Klang, killing 25 people, displacing thousands more, and causing losses worth RM3.1 billion.
