Sony Has A Patent For A Console With Two GPUs

Multi-GPU setups are usually the shtick of gaming PCs, out of consoles’ reach. But that could change, if the contents of a patent does come to life. And it’s one granted to Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Of course, the patent does not mention a specific console. Instead, it describes a “scalable gaming console” where “a second GPU [is] communicatively coupled to the first GPU”.

With the PS4 Pro setting a precedent, it’s possible that SIE will have a PS5 Pro in three or four years’ time. And that would be the earliest we can see a product that makes use of the idea behind this patent. But as with all patents, it’s difficult to tell when, or if, the company will make something of it.

Sony PlayStation 5

The idea of a multi-GPU console is certainly an interesting one. Based on the performance of the latest games for the Sony PS5, it’s certainly one way to achieve the promise of native 4K and 120fps across the board.

But before that happens, SIE needs to sort out a lot of things with its current PS5. One is the lack of uniformity in its fans, and then there’s the issue with the DualSense stick drift. And most importantly right now, the supply of the console itself.
