SIBU (Aug 23): Sibu MP Oscar Ling has urged the state government to investigate into the cause of a logjam that has reoccurred in Rejang River last Saturday.

He said that the logjam has caused water treatment plants along affected areas to be unable to operate as normal due to high pollutants in the water.

“The Sibu Water Board (SWB) has announced that all the water treatment plants in Sibu have ceased to operate at the moment, and the clean water supply to the whole Sibu will be affected.

“The log jam also disturbed the water ecosystem in the Rejang River,” he said in a statement today.

Ling said in a similar incident in 2010, fishes had died from suffocation due to high pollutants in the water and oxygen level in the water had been reduced.

The mistake has reoccurred and the people deserve an answer from the state government, he added.

“This is a serious environmental issue. Valuable fishes in the Rejang River might disappear if this issue is not solved and being allowed to happen more and more often.

“I demand the state government to release the investigation report soonest and measures that have been taken since the last log jam incident in 2010, and the reason it happened again today,” he said.
