SPAOH (July 7): The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will meet tomorrow in Kuching to discuss the state’s preparations to transit into Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).

Its chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said the meeting would discuss the possibility of Sarawak being divided into zones and how it should be done.

“Our preparations will also assess the Covid-19 pandemic situation in every district,” Uggah told the press after attending a briefing on the progress of development project in Bukit Saban held at Spaoh sub-district office earlier today.

The briefing was conducted by officers from the divisional Public Works Dept and the Drainage and Irrigation Departments.

Betong MP Datuk Robert Lawson Chuat, Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu and a political secretary to chief minister Dr Richard Rapu were among those present.

Uggah, who is also deputy chief minister, added the state would use the established NRP three threshold value indicators in moving from Phase 1 to Phase 2 and subsequent phases.

He said those were based firstly on the number of positive cases recorded, capacity of ICU beds and the percentage of vaccination already given out.

“If our daily figures on positive cases continue to show a downward trend like in the past few days and today, we should be moving into the Phase 2 soon,” he said.

On the downward trend of Covid-19 cases in the state, he said there could be two reasons.

“First is the Movement Control Order(MCO) which has put restrictions on our movement. Many activities too are not allowed.

“So the the purpose of the MCO is to get people to stay at home where they cannot congregate or go inter-district travel, thus stopping the chain of transmission.

“Another reason and to a certain extent the drop may be due to our very active vaccination programme.

“But we cannot really be sure as we have yet to complete vaccinating our targetted 2.2 million people,” he said.

Earlier Uggah, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, presented fruit packs to frontliners at the Dewan Rentap Vaccination Centre in Betong as a token of appreciation to them.

The 100 fruit packs were contributed by the Agriculture Department.
