KOTA KINABALU: A 102-year-old man, Wong Kok Chew, is the oldest senior citizen in Sabah, as of June 29, to receive the Covid-19 vaccine at the Sabah Federal Government Administration Complex on Tuesday.

Wong arrived at the vaccination centre (PPV) at 9am, accompanied by his daughter, Anna Wong.

Kota Kinabalu Area Health Officer Dr Suhaila Osman who is also Kota Kinabalu PPV chief coordinator, said the centre was excited to welcome Wong’s arrival.

“At first, we were a bit worried because he was already 102 years old and might need wheelchair assistance and so on.

“Quite surprisingly, Wong didn’t need a wheelchair and signed his own consent form, making us feel overwhelmed by his seriousness.

“One thing to be proud of is that Wong himself asked to be vaccinated after seeing his children already getting vaccinated,” said Dr Suhaila, in a statement shared by the State Information Department.

She added that this should be an example because the oldest citizen in the state himself came forward to receive the vaccine, let alone the community out there.

Wong received the first dose of vaccine injection given by public health nurse, Jayelien Paungin from the Kota Kinabalu Area Health Office.
