KUALA LUMPUR: This year has been a challenge, what with the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc on people’s lives and livelihoods throughout the country. But amid the adversity, a few windows of opportunity have opened for enterprising Malaysians.
It used to be that tuition classes were only available to students who lived close to a tuition centre. Now, through the use of online platforms, Malaysian students can learn from the best without leaving the safety of their home and without travelling great distances.
This is largely thanks to the efforts of MyTuition, an online learning platform that employs the best educators in the country and virtually connects them to students eager to learn from them.
According to Eddie Lim Yit Min, the man behind MyTuition and a former national athlete, the launch of MyTuition at the time of the implementation of the Movement Control Order was a pure coincidence.
The reception of MyTuition’s services has been more than cordial, with thousands of students attending tuition classes and seminars on the platform. It recorded over half a million page visits during the peak season in June, and the interest is not likely to die off soon.
“I think we’re enjoying demand for the tuition classes not just because of Covid-19. The teachers we have on the platform are handpicked … We have book authors, “Guru Cemerlang” and chief SPM markers,” Lim said.
It is these teachers who draw students to the platform and, unlike traditional tuition centres, students can learn from teachers who may be in a completely different part of the country.
Since its inception this year, MyTuition has grown in leaps and bounds, to the point of receiving recognition from institutions of higher learning like Taylor’s College that has partnered with MyTuition to launch “Taylor’s RM1 million SPM Scholarship” for 500 Form 5 students of the 2021 batch.
This scholarship will ensure that these lucky students will benefit from MyTuition’s classes without having to worry about whether they can afford it or not.
Under the programme, 500 students will be selected based on various factors, including their 2018 PT3 results and their household income.
Once selected, students will be given full access to MyTuition’s classes, covering Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics and History for three months from January to March 2021.
But even if a student is not selected for the scholarship, they are still eligible to receive a variety of benefits and rewards.
In addition to RM1,080 worth of credits in their MyTuition account, the student will also receive free e-reference books and materials written by accredited educators.
They will also be provided a ticket to Taylor’s College’s intensive online SPM seminar scheduled to be held in October 2021.
This seminar will cover a whopping 12 subjects and is intended to fully prepare students for their SPM examinations.
Applications are open at MyTuition until Dec 24, 2020, and successful applicants will be notified via e-mail by Dec 30.
Taylor College’s ‘The Risers’ app is a required download for applicants. They can redeem items offered by the scholarship there.
