Rescuers search for longhouse resident feared drowned in Sg Serupai

BINTULU (Aug 23): A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been launched for a missing man, who is feared to have drowned in Sungai Serupai, Tatau.

The victim has been identified as Lasu Umkar, 47, from Rumah Ajah, Sungai Serupai Baru.

In a statement, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said Tatau fire station received a call from the Tatau police station about the incident around 6.30pm yesterday (Sunday).

As the location is under the administration of Mukah fire station, the operation was handed over and began at 9.45am today.

It began with a surface search operation around a 3km radius from where Lasu was last seen.

As of the time of writing, there has been no sign of him.

According to a police report lodged by a family member, the victim is believed to have jumped into the river around 3.30pm.

The SAR operation involved firefighters from Mukah and Tatau, police from Tatau, Marine Police personnel, Civil Defence Force Bintulu personnel, and local villagers.
