KUCHING: The Belaga police station was razed to the ground in a fire that broke out at 1pm today, as firemen raced from 170km away to the scene.

Police commissioner Aidi Ismail said the wooden building, built in 1993, was completely destroyed in the blaze.

“It is believed the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. All the police personnel escaped unhurt,” he said, adding that a temporary police station will be set up soon.

Meanwhile, the fire and rescue director Khirudin Drahman said his department received an emergency call around 1.15pm.

“Five firemen from Bintulu fire and rescue station were sent to the scene, about 170km away.

It took them about four hours as they needed to go through a 40km timber road to reach Belaga,” he said when contacted.
