The Dang Wang police department is investigating a video that showed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak flouting the Movement Control Order (MCO) standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Najib was caught on the video not scanning the MySejahtera QR code on his mobile and failing to take his body temperature before entering a chicken rice restaurant in Bukit Bintang on Friday, 19 March.
According to Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Mohamad Zainal Abdullah, during the investigation, all those involved in this case will be called to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to testify.
“The investigation paper will be handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) once the investigation has been completed,” he said in a statement released today, 20 March.
Mohamad Zainal also urged the public to comply with the SOPs.
“Stern action in accordance with the law will be taken against violators,” he added.
The video showed that Najib did not scan the MySejahtera QR code using his mobile or record his details and check his body temperature before entering Restoran Nasi Ayam Hainan Chee Meng yesterday
In the video, that was shot on a mobile and circulated across social media platforms, the former prime minister is seen arriving at the restaurant accompanied by a police escort.
Following which, he is ushered into the outlet without performing any of the required SOPs.
He is, however, seen wearing a face mask.
Najib has since owned up to not following the SOPs
Amidst widespread public outrage, he took to his Facebook page to admit that he breached COVID-19 SOPs during his visit to the restaurant and urged the authorities to issue him with a fine.
According to him, he was taken into the shop immediately as arrangements were made.
“I admit my mistake this time in not checking in myself although my officers did,” the former prime minister wrote in his post, adding that his action was an “unintentional” mistake.
“Usually I’d comply with all SOPs that have been implemented in all my activities and movements. I urge the authorities to issue a summons for my mistake, which was unintentional.”
He said that he will pay the fine voluntarily and would do so within seven days to get the 50% “early-bird discount” rate of RM750
“I will pay the compound within seven days in order to get the early bird discount of 50%, meaning a fine of RM750. I will pay the summons for my mistake voluntarily,” Najib wrote in the post.
The Pekan Member of Parliament, however, hinted at other ministers practising “double standard”.
“Other people, other parties and ministers, I don’t know. Them practising double standards, it’s their problem. I don’t want any double standards in my case,” he added.
