OCM: 612 athletes to carry Malaysia’s challenge in Hanoi

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — A total of 612 athletes have been registered by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) for the Hanoi SEA Games in Vietnam, which is scheduled to take place from May 12 to 23.

OCM, in a statement today, said from this figure, 226 athletes are under Category A (costs are fully borne) and 386 are under Category B (costs to be refunded if a medal is won).

OCM said Malaysia also registered 206 officials, with 102 under Category A and 104 under Category B, for the biennial Games before the closing date for entries by name yesterday.

“The number of male athletes to be sent to Hanoi is 377 (62 per cent) and that for women is 235 (38 per cent) while the number of male officials is 175 compared with 31 female officials,” said the statement.

OCM also said the deadline for nomination of athletes was yesterday and associations had submitted their lists.

Athletics named 23 male and 14 female athletes (18 under Category A and 19 under Category B), while esports nominated 47 male athletes under Category B for six Games Titles and four male athletes under Category A for FIFA Online 4 which is being managed by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

“Swimming named 11 male and three female athletes (three under Category A and 11 under Category B).

“Rowing named one male athlete who made it through the time trial while canoeing listed four male and two female athletes (one in Category A and five in Category B) after qualifying in time trials,” it said.

OCM also confirmed that the Malaysian contingent will participate in 37 of the 40 sports to be contested in Vietnam.

The three sports which Malaysia will not participate in are handball, vovinam and wrestling. — Bernama
