Nora Anne’s inquest ends, decision on Dec 31 or Jan 4

The inquest was held to determine Nora Anne Quoirin’s cause of death.

SEREMBAN: The decision on the inquest into French-Irish teenager Nora Anne Quoirin’s death will be known either on Dec 31 or Jan 4 next year, said coroner Maimoonah Aid on the last day of the inquest today.

She said the testimony of the 47 witnesses and evidence presented during the proceedings since Aug 24 were sufficient.

Among the witnesses were the girl’s parents — Meabh Jaseprine Quoirin and Sebastien Quoirin.

“At the beginning of the inquest, I was given a rather long list of witnesses and we have shortened it.

“As we know, this is not a criminal proceeding. This is an inquest to identify the cause of death of the deceased. So for me, as far as the witnesses called to testify and the evidence presented, it is enough for me to make a verdict,” she said.

Maimoonah said although the inquest did not require The Dusun Resort and Nora Anne’s family to file written submissions, they could do so before Dec 24.

A total of 64 witnesses were listed to be called to testify to assist in the investigation.

Earlier, during the proceedings, the 47th witness, criminal investigation officer Wan Faridah Mustanin told the Coroner’s Court that the investigation conducted from Aug 4 to 14, 2019 found no criminal elements that could be linked to Nora Anne’s death.

Nora Anne, 15, went missing on Aug 4 last year, a day after she and her family arrived in Malaysia for a two-week holiday at a resort in Pantai here.

Nora Anne’s body was found nine days later, on Aug 13, near a stream in a hilly area, 2.5km from the resort, following a massive search operation.

A preliminary post-mortem report revealed there was no criminal element in Nora Anne’s death and that the teenager had died of gastrointestinal bleeding due to prolonged stress and hunger.
