MP hauled up over last year’s talk on Sosma and LTTE

The Klang MP was called in for questioning by Bukit Aman today.

PETALING JAYA: Klang MP Charles Santiago revealed today that he was called for questioning by police over a speech he made more than a year ago when he criticised a security offence law and mentioned an outlawed terrorist organisation.

He said he was called in for questioning by Bukit Aman today and was asked 18 questions pertaining to the speech last November as part of an investigation under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which concerns making statements that may amount to public mischief by causing fear and alarm.

Speaking to FMT, Santiago said the talk he delivered touched on the double standards in the application of the law by the police and the laws used to pursue political interest.

He said the talk, hosted by Suara Rakyat Malaysia, where he had spoken about the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was held at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on Nov 25 last year.

“I was shown two video clips by the interrogating officers (of my speech) and I told them that I would reply to them in court. The probe is absolutely unnecessary.

“It is starting to look like a new round of intimidation to quell any form of legitimate dissent. What I spoke about was of public interest.

“We have many crucial issues that the government and enforcement agencies need to look into. Harassing MPs isn’t one of them,” he said.
