A TikTok capturing moviegoers being escorted out of the cinema during a screening of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It has gone viral

According to The Jakarta Post, more than one audience member had to be escorted out after they were heard screaming in the movie theatre in Bekasi, Indonesia.

In the over one minute long TikTok uploaded by @witeewitee, the horror movie can be seen being paused on the silver screen while a group of people gather around a moviegoer seated on the left side of the movie theatre.

“I actually heard the person screaming and shouting from early on, but I didn’t know they were possessed,” said the TikTok user who filmed the incident.

“Then suddenly, the rows behind and in front of them started to get rowdy. Then several minutes later, the lights came on, the movie was paused, and the people screaming were escorted out of the theatre,” she told Indonesia’s news programme Liputan6.

Local news portal Tribun Lampung reported that the horror movie was resumed following the troubled moviegoer’s evacuation.

However, that was not the end of it. Not long after the incident, it is learnt that another person who was involved in helping the screaming moviegoer was found to be ‘possessed’ as well.

“So after that, there was one mother, who had helped the lady who was in the first trance, who suddenly burst into tears. People close to me said the mother was also possessed,” said @witeewitee.

She said that maybe the moviegoers chose the wrong seats because they sat too close to the screen.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It premiered in Indonesia earlier this month. The movie is the eighth instalment in The Conjuring Universe and is based on the 1981 trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson for a murder case in Connecticut.

The case was also known as ‘Devil Made Me Do It’ because it marked the first time in the US that a defendant claimed “demonic possession” as a defence.

During the trial in 1981, Arne Cheyenne Johnson boldly claimed that he murdered his landlord because he was influenced by the devil.

At the time of writing, the TikTok capturing the commotion at the movie theatre in Bekasi has garnered over 2.5 million views

Many netizens weighed in on the plausibility of the incident.

“[They’re just] looking for attention,” The Jakarta Post quoted a netizen as saying.

“Maybe this is more like a panic attack […] just like when someone had a seizure when watching Joker,” added another person.

“Oh God, this is the first time I’ve seen a movie (in theatre) pause like it’s YouTube,” one TikTok user commented, as quoted by Tribun Lampung.

“Maybe the cinema had been empty for a long time during the pandemic, (and) once the cinema opens, the horror movie was immediately set to play. The devil wants to come,” a netizen hypothesised.
