Monster Hunter Film Inspiration Came From Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

The upcoming Monster Hunter movie by Paul WS Anderson sees Mila Jovovich’s character, a military officer from our world getting sent to the world of Monster Hunter. It’s quite the major point of contention, at least for now while the movie has yet to premiere. In an interview with Capcom USA, Anderson claims that the inspiration to have such a character came from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Specifically, the Monster Hunter Portable 3rd tie in missions of the PlayStation Portable title. For those who are unfamiliar, Metal Gear Solid, Peace Walker had three monster hunting tie in missions. These had you “hunt” a Rathalos, a Tigrex, and the Metal Gear original, the organic Gear REX. And you do this while playing as either Big Boss or soldiers in his MSF outfit.

Another reason Anderson said for making a new character in the film is to recreate the novel feeling of entering the world of Monster Hunter. This reasoning is pretty shaky even when compared to the inspiration drawn from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. When it comes to a new character, there are other ways to do it besides the overused other world trope. One example is to have a new hunter fresh out of hunting academy, or something else along those lines.
