A new COVID-19 cluster has recently emerged in Terengganu and the index patient is a man who travelled interstate from Sabah
According to Harian Metro, the man had attended his sibling’s wedding in Terengganu and it was found that the event did not comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the government.
Terengganu Health director Dr Nor Azimi Yunus said a total of 26 cases tested positive for COVID-19 from the cluster, comprising 11 family members and 15 guests who attended the wedding.
The index patient is a 32-year-old man who tested positive for COVID-19 on 6 April when screened before returning to Sabah
In a statement issued on Facebook, Dr Nor Azimi Yunus said, “A meeting between him and a friend to send money and gifts for the wedding caused the friend to get infected. The friend then held an aqiqah ceremony at their hometown which caused five other family members and seven guests to get infected.”
“There was interstate travel and gathering that did not comply with SOPs. If they followed SOPs, there would not have been infections. Even if there were to be infections, it would have been at a minimum and not create cluster as large as this.”
“That is why we remind you to postpone gatherings. We do not know who we’re meeting, even if they’re family members or colleagues. We have to enforce SOP, not just hand it over to official agencies.”

There are currently 238 active cases in Terengganu with the most infections recorded in Besut district with 128 cases
This is followed by 43 cases in Kuala Nerus, 27 in Dungun, 27 in Kuala Terengganu, seven in Hulu Terengganu, four in Marang and three in Setiu.
