KEMAMAN: Quick action by a father and son helped save a man whose Perodua Myvi was swept away by flood waters in Kampung Batu 10, near the Chukai toll plaza exit near here today.

Ausdi Muhamed, 53, and his son Amir Syafiq, 28, were at home when a fellow villager telephoned at about 12:50pm, informing them that a car had been swept away by floodwaters in the area.

“He (the villager) asked me to bring along my boat as the driver was said to be still inside the vehicle. My son and I rushed to the scene, about one kilometre from our house.

“At the location, we saw a white Perodua Myvi floating down the road. We boarded the boat to get to the car and managed to open the door and helped the man get into the boat,” he said when met by reporters at his house today.

It is learnt that the driver of the car, who is a medical assistant at a hospital in Chukai, was on his way to work from his hometown in Bukit Payong near Marang. He tried to pass through the flooded road but his car was swept away by the strong currents. The driver did not sustain any injuries.

Ausdi said they took almost 30 minutes to save the man, adding that the car had to be pulled out of the water by the Civil Defence Force and the Fire and Rescue Department.

Chukai Fire and Rescue chief Mohd Zailani Abdullah advised road users to be cautious and avoid driving through flooded roads.
