MACC detains govt servant, native chief

KOTA KINABALU: An administrative assistant of a government department was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly receiving RM24,000 in bribes.

According to sources, the suspect, in his 50s, was arrested at the Lahad Datu MACC office after his statement was recorded at 2.30pm on July 13.

It was understood that the suspect had allegedly abused his position for personal gain by submitting an invoice for a company with which he allegedly had connection.

He was released on MACC bail of RM10,000 with one surety.

MACC Sabah director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the case will be investigated under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti -Corruption Commission Act 2009.

The suspect is expected to be charged at the Tawau Court today (July 15), said Karunanithy.

In a separate case, a 54-year-old native chief was detained by MACC for deceiving a woman of RM1,000.

According to sources, the suspect had allegedly deceived the woman into believing that he could help the latter and her sister in issuing birth certificates and identification cards for them.

The suspect was held at 2pm on Tuesday (July 13) at the Lahad Datu MACC office after his statement was recorded.

He was released on MACC bail of RM5,000 with one surety.

Karunanithy confirmed the case and said the suspect will be charged at the Tawau Court today (July 15) under Section 415 of the Penal Code.
