Kapit can achieve 80 pct herd immunity by end of July, says Masing

KUCHING (June 22): Kapit Division is on track to achieve herd immunity by the end of next month, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing.

He said this is thanks to the Covid-19 vaccination drive hybrid approach of vaccinate first and register later, which provides greater flexibility and convenience for those in rural and semi-urban areas to be vaccinated as quickly as possible.

“If 21,000 vaccines per week are available as promised by Kuala Lumpur, Kapit Division can attain 80 per cent herd immunity by the end of July 2021,” he said in a statement.

Masing said the Kapit Divisional Health Office, assisted by the Resident’s Office, has been very flexible with walk-in recipients arriving at vaccination centres, as long as they possess a MyKad.

“My observation on the vaccination procedures is that they are smooth and very well organised. This orderly process is applicable both in the rural and vaccination centres in town.

“All those who come to be vaccinated are very orderly too. They waited patiently for their turn and those with whom I managed to talk to are very grateful to be jabbed in order to be protected from Covid-19,” he said.

Masing said the Ministry of Health has assigned 16 vaccinations teams in the division, who managed to vaccinate 4,128 people on Monday.

The vaccination rate will be increased to 6,000 per day once more vaccines are available.

“On Monday, I went to see the vaccination centre site at SK Nanga Oyan in the interior part of my Baleh constituency, involving 11 longhouses with 256 occupants. They’ve used their own funds to make the trip to get vaccinated,” he shared.

Today (June 22), Masing visited vaccination centres in Kapit town at SMK Kapit No. 2 and Kapit Police Multipurpose Hall at Taman Pasifik, Jalan Selirik.

“Those vaccinated in Kapit’s town vaccination centres consisted not only of residents in Kapit and the neighbouring longhouses, but also Kapit folk who reside in Sibu, Bintulu, and Kuching, who found it difficult to get their turn to be vaccinated via MySejahtera,” he added.
