KUCHING (June 12): Gawai visiting sparked one of three new Covid-19 clusters in Sarawak, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily update today.
The cluster in Kapit, dubbed the Melatai Cluster, saw a total of 139 individuals screened with 45 testing positive, 23 negative and 17 still awaiting lab test results.
All those who tested positive were admitted to the Kapit Hospital and Kapit district quarantine and low-risk patients treatment centre (PKRC).
Another cluster, the Kampung Sebandi Hilir Cluser in Lundu, also emerged from a pre-Gawai celebration during a ‘miring’ ceremony on May 31.
The ‘miring’ gathering saw 34 people screened with nine testing positive and 25 negative.
All those who tested positive were admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and Kuching district PKRC.
The third cluster, Kampung Tabuan Haji Drahman Cluster in Kuching, is a community cluster involving Kampung Haji Drahman, due to close family contact and social movement amongst the residents there.
A total of 62 people were screened where 33 tested positive and 29 negative.
All the positive cases were admitted to SGH and Kuching district PKRC.
At the same time, SDMC also announced the end of one cluster, Penurin Cluster in Betong after it did not record any new positive cases in the last 28 days.
Meanwhile, the state has 82 active clusters, with 10 continuing to report a total of 45 new Covid-19 cases.
Topping the list was the Melatai Cluster in Kapit (13), Pekan Tatau Baru Cluster in Tatau (12), Muara Tabuan Cluster in Kuching (9), Kampung Sinar Budi Baru Cluster in Kuching (4), Sungai Kakus Cluster in Tatau (2), Jalan Cattleya Cluster in Miri (1), Skim B Cluster in Meradong (1), Ulu Teru Cluster in Beluru (1), Bali Pie Cluster in Subis (1) and Jalan Samarakan Cluster in Tatau (1).
