KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Democratic Action Party (DAP) elected representatives met Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Works Datuk Seri Bung Moktar to raise the concerns of the public regarding the recent flash floods and infrastructure issues in Kota Kinabalu.
Present were Kota Kinabalu member of parliament Chan Foong Hin, Luyang assemblyman Phoong Jin Zhe, and Likas assemblyman Tan Lee Fatt.
They discussed the recent flash floods and they hope that Bung would bring the issue to the attention of the cabinet to improve Kota Kinabalu’s drainage system.
In a joint statement on Tuesday, the DAP elected representatives stated that Kota Kinabalu’s drainage system is worn out. They believe that it is the main reason triggering flash floods in the city and they appeal to the state government to look into it.
They also mentioned that the drainage system must be upgraded to fit the developing city.
They slammed the contract companies appointed to clean and maintain the drainage system in Kota Kinabalu for not doing their job. When there is heavy downpour, it would result in floods as the water could not recede in time.
They suggested that the state government take stern action and fine these contract companies as the floods have affected the public severely.
Phoong also complained the long delay in rectifying the Lintas U-turn flyover. He hopes that Bung can look into the matter as the minister had promised that it would be completed in a month’s time.
However, five months have passed and the rectification is still ongoing. Phoong believes that this has greatly affected the safety of the public.
