On Friday, 11 June, a police team was left shocked after finding a wedding being held in Butterworth. Social events such as weddings are banned amidst the total lockdown curb the spread of COVID-19.

The team was conducting a routine standard operating procedures (SOPs) compliance operation in the North Seberang Prai district when they came across the ceremony.

District police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said that the incident has left him baffled.

“I am irked as there are still people out there who continue to blatantly flout the SOPs put in place during the lockdown period by hosting a wedding do. This is a selfish act without taking into consideration the current situation, which is causing the efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 to fail,” he said.

According to Noorzainy, the police team was shocked by the attitude of the people who refused to observe the SOPs and went on to organise such an event with authorisation.

He warned police will not compromise in taking action against those who disobey.

19 family members including children were present at the event

Prior to the team conducted a check at the house, they had received a tip-off from the public.

Of the 19 people, three individuals — the father of the groom, the organiser of the reception, and a cameraman — were slapped with RM2,000 fine each, while 16 others were let off with a stern warning.
