KUCHING (May 19): Police yesterday identified two individuals found unconscious inside a vehicle here, one of whom was later pronounced dead, as a married couple.

Acting Padawan police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong in a statement said the deceased was a 39-year-old man surnamed Vong while the woman, his 38-year-old wife.

The couple was found inside a vehicle parked at Batu Kawah New Township here on Monday evening.

“Both victims were removed from the vehicle, however the man was pronounced dead while his wife, who was still unconscious, was rushed to Sarawak General Hospital.

“Further investigation found eight cans of beer inside the vehicle, with no suspicious items or tools,” he said.

According to Lim, an eyewitness spotted Vong exiting the vehicle around 4.30pm and staggering his way to a convenience store, appearing as though he was under the influence of alcohol.

“According to the eyewitness’ account, Vong stood in front of the store for about 30 seconds before walking back to his vehicle,” he said.

Lim added that the eyewitness then saw the vehicle’s reverse lights come on and assumed it was about to leave the area; however it continued to remain stationary.

“When the eyewitness was about to close his shop at 5.45pm, he noticed the vehicle was still in the same spot with the engine running, and decided to approach it.

“Upon peering inside, he saw a woman lying across the man’s thighs and knocked on the vehicle’s window, but did not get any response from either,” said Lim, adding that footage from a closed-circuit television (CCTV) in the area confirmed the eyewitness’ account.

“The CCTV footage also showed Vong’s wife arriving at the scene in an unidentified vehicle at 3.19pm and then entering his car,” he said.

Lim said the case has been classified as sudden death as no criminal elements were found in the scene, adding police are waiting for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.

Meanwhile in an earlier statement, a spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre said it had received a call at 6.37pm Monday about a couple trapped inside a vehicle.

The spokesperson said firefighters dispatched to the scene arrived to discover the two unconscious inside the vehicle, with the engine still running.

“The victims were removed from the vehicle but they were both unconscious. The Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit had also provided early treatment.

“However, the male victim was pronounced dead while the female victim, who was still unconscious, was taken to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further action,” the spokesperson said.
