SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government is working closely with the state Health Department (JKN) to ensure all frontliners at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) Klang are screened for Covid-19.
This was revealed by Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari when asked about the measures the state is taking following the confirmation by JKN that 50 staff at the hospital had tested positive for Covid-19, with the number rising to 62 as of today.
“This is not the first time this has happened in a hospital and I am sure we will overcome it.
“I will go there in the next one or two days to check the next steps that will be taken, including testing all the workers there.
“We will discuss the screening mechanism with the Selangor Health Department first, but we will do it soon because these healthcare workers are at high risk of infection,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking to the media after handing over a RM240,000 donation on behalf of the state government to various Christian bodies at the Selangor state secretariat building here.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, the Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) and the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship Malaysia (NECFM) each received RM80,000 to distribute aid packages filled with essentials to needy families for Christmas.
Meanwhile, Amirudin, who was asked to comment on the high number of Covid-19 cases in the Klang area, said that the situation was “under control”.
He also said the large number of cases in the Teratai cluster, the country’s largest, had taught the government the importance of testing foreign workers, many of whom live in cramped conditions.
Linked to Top Glove’s workers in Meru, Klang, the Teratai cluster recorded three new cases yesterday, with a total of 5,749 cases so far.
“That is the most important lesson we learnt from the Teratai cluster – foreign workers in the manufacturing and construction sectors face a high risk of Covid-19 infection,” said Amirudin.
Earlier today, Klang MP Charles Santiago expressed concern about the nearly 3,800 Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths in his constituency over the past two weeks, stating that residents in the area were panicking as a result.
