After polls flop, ‘Anak Kampung’ Jimmy goes back to his music roots

Singer Jimmy Palikat garnered 60 votes in the Tangau constituency in the Sabah election, won by STAR president Jeffrey Kitingan.

KOTA KINABALU: After failing to wow the voters in his entry into the political arena during the Sabah election in September, local singer Jimmy Palikat, famed for his national hit song “Anak Kampung”, is going back to what he knows best – music.

He told FMT he was now recording a new song to be released soon, but remained grateful for the new experience of contesting in an election.

“I’m not disappointed despite losing the election. In fact, it gave me new strength to continue fighting in life.

“I’m actually in the middle of recording a new single. I’ve taken a rest from the industry for a while and now might be the best time for me to return,” he said.

Jimmy, however, does not rule out the possibility of making a return to politics in the future, saying he was only taking a break to focus on the entertainment industry.

“My desire to contest in an election has long been a private thing and it’s not impossible for me to return, because my intention is to help people and champion the rights of Sabahans,” he said.

In the Sabah polls, Jimmy contested as an independent candidate for the Tangau constituency but lost his deposit as he only managed to garner 60 votes. STAR president Jeffrey Kitingan, who is now a deputy chief minister, won the seat.
