KUCHING (Mar 3): The proposal for state government-linked companies (GLC) to purchase a substantial stake in Sarawak United FC must be thoroughly studied before any decisions can be made, said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“There must be a willing-buyer-and-willing-seller basis. The proposal cannot just be put to the government and be simply adopted like that. It’s a good proposal but it has to be deeply studied first,” he told reporters after Drugs Prevention Association of Malaysia (Pemadam) Sarawak meeting here.

On Tuesday, Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) president Dato Posa Majais said he had written to the state government seeking investment from government-linked companies into the football club in order to remain financially sound.

It has been reported that Posa and FAS are the current shareholders of the football club and potential investors will be entitled to up to 70 per cent of stake in the club.

On the announcement by Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri that tourism activities were now allowed in Conditional and Recovery Movement Control Order areas, Abdul Karim said the state was still subjected to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the State Disaster Management Committee.

“The SOPs announced by Ismail was mainly for Peninsula Malaysia in view of the Covid-19 situation there. We will study those procedures as stipulated by the federal government and adapt it accordingly to our local requirements if necessary,” he said.

Abdul Karim is also Sarawak’s Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister.
