The police are seen inspecting the vehicles at a roadblock during Ops Rentas.
KUCHING (May 19): A total of 476 vehicles out of 6,959 vehicles inspected in roadblocks across the state during ‘Ops Rentas’ from May 10 to 16 were ordered to turn back.
Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the vehicles were ordered to turn back for not possessing inter-district travel permit when checked at 34 roadblocks.
“During this operation, a total of 50 locations were targeted, of which 34 were road checkpoints and 16 were patrol lookouts.
“A total of 8,470 individuals and 6,956 vehicles were inspected,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that a total of 3,470 summonses for various offences were issued during the operation.
In addition, 28 motorcycles which had been modified were confiscated under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987, he said.
Ops Rentas was carried out in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri to check on inter-district and inter-zone travel without police permit or without a valid reason, in accordance with the standard operating procedure issued by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
Meanwhile, acting Kuching district police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said a total of 512 vehicles were inspected during a a similar operation in Kuching, out of which 356 were issued summonses for various offences.
He added that the offences include modification of vehicle exhaust and structure, not wearing seat belt, jumping red traffic lights and ignoring traffic signals.
“The operation went smoothly without any untoward incident,” he said.
