KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Health Department recorded 230 new Covid-19 cases in the state on Friday with five deaths and one new cluster reported in the last 24 hours.
Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said two deaths were recorded in Lahad Datu and one each in Kunak, Sandakan and Kudat.
“New cluster, Kluster Tanjung Pitas in Pitas district involving fishermen community infection in Mukim Mapan-Mapan.
“Recording of this cluster started in Pitas Hospital through a symptomatic screening on June 27, where the case index is a 26-year-old housewife from Kg Naruntung.
“Following the case, Pitas Health Office received 20 more positive cases, including three positive cases from Pitas Health Clinic Lab on June 28 where one of them was the case index’s husband who is a fisherman and selling fish at Kg Taritipan, Kota Marudu,” said Masidi in his daily statement.
He added one more case found from community call screening on June 29, and making it 43 total cases after 22 new positive cases were recorded on July 1.
According to a preliminary investigation, there are two possibilities of the infection. First, the movement of villagers to Banggi Island throughout May and June, and also the movement of fishmongers in Kg Naruntung who are selling fish in Pitas and Kota Marudu.
As of July 2, authorities are still conducting contact tracing for the cluster.
