KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has called on politicians from both sides of the divide to stop politicking and focus on the Covid-19 pandemic.
Salleh said in a blogpost that politics needed to be put aside for now to give Putrajaya the room to address the Covid-19 situation and other national issues.
He said the people were sick of leaders being busy with politics when what they wanted was for the economy and public health situation to improve.
“To achieve this, we need to find a common ground and put aside our differences for a while. The focus must be given to fighting Covid-19. Take a break from politics to save the economy.
“In the past year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Muhyiddin Yassin has shown that the government is serious about managing Covid-19. It would not have been easy to implement the various measures in an unstable political climate.
“However, he was able to manage the differences in a calm and focused manner. Although he was faced with criticism and attacks from various quarters, he kept calm,” he said.
Salleh also said he was confident in Muhyiddin’s pledge to call for a snap election when the Covid-19 situation improves, which will give the power to the people to choose the government they want.
“Will they vote because of the party or based on current issues or the environment around them? Only the people can answer this question,” he said.
