Covid-19: Sarawak records fewer than 300 new cases for second straight day

KUCHING (July 7): Sarawak recorded less than 300 new Covid-19 cases two days in a row today at 289, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

It said in its Covid-19 daily update that the state also recorded three death cases, bringing the death toll to 424.

Kuching recorded the highest number of cases at 64 followed by Sibu (37), Saratok (24), Miri (22), Bintulu (22), Sarikei (16), Song (14), Samarahan (13), Kapit (11), Subis (10), and Serian (10).

There were also 14 districts which reported single-digit cases namely Mukah (9), Bau (7), Selangau (6), Sri Aman (5), Kanowit (4), Telang Usan (3), Tatau (2), Betong (2), Lubok Antu (2), Pusa (2), and one case each in Bukit Mabong, Meradong, Simunjan and Belaga, SDMC said.

The latest cases brought the cumulative number of cases in the state to 67,560.

The committee said 195 of the new cases detected today were from screenings of individuals with contact to positive cases; 36 from screenings of individuals from existing active clusters; 37 from other screenings at health facilities; and 17 from screenings of symptomatic individuals at health facilities.

“There were also three Import B cases involving individuals who had returned from other states in the country, and an Import A case involving an individual who had returned from Papua New Guinea,” it said.

On the fatalities, it said all three cases were recorded in Sibu.

“The oldest victim was an 82-year-old woman from Sibu who had tested positive on May 8 while the youngest victim was a 52-year-old man from Selangau.

“The male victim, who had comorbidities of high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia and heart disease, had tested positive on June 15,” it said.

As for the third victim, SDMC said the 60-year-old woman from Sibu had tested positive for Covid-19 on June 27, and she also had high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia and heart disease.

Meanwhile, the number of recovered patients today also exceeded new infection cases, with 308 allowed to be discharged from hospitals and quarantine and low-risk patients treatment centres (PKRC) across the state.

SDMC said 65 were discharged from the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and PKRC under SGH; 55 from Bintulu Hospital and the PKRC under Bintulu Hospital; 50 from Sibu Hospital and the PKRC under Sibu Hospital; 40 were discharged from Miri Hospital and PKRC under Miri Hospital; 36 from PKRC Mukah; 27 from Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC Sri Aman; 11 from Sarikei Hospital and the PKRC under Sarikei Hospital; nine from PKRC Serian; nine from Kapit Hospital and PKRC under Kapit Hospital; and six from PKRC Betong.

“The total number of recoveries in the state have now increased to 57,070 or 84.47 per cent out of the overall cases,” said the committee.

It also said that 9,910 patients were still warded and under medical supervision at hospitals and PKRCs throughout the state, where 3,203 were being treated at SGH; 2,030 at Sibu Hospital and PKRC Sibu; 1,467 at Miri Hospital; 1,028 at Bintulu Hospital; 839 at Kapit Hospital and PKRC Kapit; 351 at Sarikei Hospital; 323 at Sri Aman Hospital; 223 at PKRC Serian; 194 at PKRC Betong; 175 at PKRC Mukah; 59 at PKRC Semuja; 13 at PKRC Lawas; and five at Limbang Hospital.
