Covid-19: 1 death, 707 new cases in Sarawak; Kuching leads with 247 cases

KUCHING (June 8): Sarawak recorded 707 new Covid-19 cases and one death today, said the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

It said in its Covid-19 daily update that the cumulative number of infections now stands at 52,581 while the latest fatality, which was recorded in Sri Aman, brought the state’s death toll to 327.

“A total 477 or 67.47 per cent of today’s cases were detected in five districts namely Kuching, Bintulu, Sri Aman, Miri and Song,” it said.

Kuching was the sole district with three-digit cases at 247 followed by Bintulu (88), Sri Aman (53), Miri (46), Song (43), Subis (40), Kapit (32), Mukah (25), Samarahan (24), Sibu (21), Beluru (17), Bau (12), and Marudi (10).

Single-digit cases were recorded in 15 districts namely Asajaya with nine, Selangau (8), Tatau (6), Tanjung Manis (5), Betong (4), Belaga (3), Kabong (3), Sarikei (2), Lubok Antu (2), Serian (2) as well as Bukit Mabong, Kanowit, Pusa, Tebedu and Telang Usan with one case each.

The committee said 39 individuals out of the 707 cases had shown signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection when screenings were conducted.

“There were also 582 cases detected from individuals who were instructed to be quarantined at quarantine centres,” it added.

It said the cases consisted of 437 cases which were detected from screenings of individuals with contact to positive cases; 143 cases from screenings of individuals from existing active clusters; 104 cases from other screenings at health facilities; and 21 cases from screenings of symptomatic individuals at health facilities.

There was also one Import A case involving an individual who had returned from Holland and one Import B case involving an individual who had returned from another state in the country.

On the death case, SDMC said it involved an 83-year-old man who hailed from Lubok Antu.

It said the victim was detected as Covid-19 positive on May 26 and had a history of comorbidities namely heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension and dyslipidemia.

Meanwhile, SDMC said 541 recovery and discharged cases were recorded today, bringing the total number of recoveries in the state to 42,898 or 81.58 per cent out of the overall cases.

It also said that 9,240 patients were still being isolated and treated at hospitals and PKRCs throughout the state.

A total of 707 new person under investigation (PUI) cases were also reported with none pending lab test result.
